What is Antique Map Collecting?

Wether you are collecting Antiuque Maps for the history, research or just for decoration, Antuque maps are facsinating and beautiful objects. Most, especially those made before 1820, are printed on handmade rag paper and couloured with beautiful old pigments and sometimes contain wonderfully engraved illustrations of ships, monsters and costumed figures.

 

 

What is the history of old maps?

Map making is a very old tradition and is Common to all ancient civilizations in one form or another, many materials were used through out the ancient time. Some of these include stone, wood, papyrus and vellum. The first world's geography was produced in  the second century by a man called Claudius Ptolemaeus and included many known towns, rivers and mountains in his work.
