Wood Pellets for Maps

Wood pellets are a relatively new type of heating source. They are popular, especially in Europe in countries like Austria and Italy. As more people get to know about the advantages of using wood pellets, the demand for this fuel source is greater.

Wood pellets are made from different forms of wood. Mostly, they are made in areas next to sawmills or other places where wood is used. This means that the wood pellets can be made on the spot with little transportation of raw materials.

The sawdust goes through a hammer mill to mash it into a doughy mass. No wood that has been treated or painted can be used, since this would interfere with their clean burning. The lump of sawdust mash is then squeezed through a press. This compresses it into small pieces, or pellets.

Pellets are made of any kind of wood that is available, so long as it is clean and pure wood. The highest quality pellets are made of hardwood sawdust, such as oak or maple. Pine and other soft woods can be used as well, but they will not burn as hot or as long. On the other hand, the press can compensate quite a bit for the differences.

Sometimes there are shortages of wood pellets because the supply of them has not caught up with the demand. When they are not in short supply, they can be bought at hardware stores and retail stores. At other times, they can be purchased from companies that deal primarily in wood pellets. They may not be as convenient, but they will have plenty of the product.

The grades of wood pellets (Holzpellet) are dependent of how much ash is produced when they are burned. The hardwoods produce the least ash and the softest woods produce the most. Most retail outlets sell the medium grade of the three.

Wood pellets are popular because they yield a lower cost of home heating than oil or natural gas. Even when they are in short supply, the wood pellets are more cost efficient. People who want to save money can buy a stove or basket and the pellets easily.

A pellet basket is a device that hangs in a fireplace to hold burning wood pellets. It is the cheapest way to get started in using wood pellets, although perhaps not the most efficient. To get the most heat out of the wood pellets, it is better to buy a special stove.

People usually do not have trouble buying the pellet stoves because they are not outrageously expensive. The cost is usually from $1500 to $3000, but they can also be more or less depending upon where you get them. Installation costs less than $500.

The wood pellets themselves usually cost less than $200 per ton. Three tons is the most you will probably use in a season. It takes some work to carry the pellets to the stove, but the savings makes it worth the effort.

Wood pellets are made with one main ingredient – sawdust. The process is a simple one. The pellets are popular because they are cheap and easy to use. When the supply can be brought up to meet the demand, people will want to use them more.
