The Important Role of Maps in
Education
Children throughout the world love referring to a map or globe as a
reference to find where or a city or country is situated.
My own son who is seven years of age loves to see where we are going as we
travel up and down the country.
“Where are we now dad?”
“Bristol, it is just past Gloucester on the map son.”
He then attempts to find it on the road map that I have bought for him.
A map is an essential part of education; they are used primarily in
geography lessons. A world globe can be a valuable addition to help show
children and young adults where a certain place is located.
A teacher may want to play a game with his/her class of who can find a
particular country on their map or globe first. This is a lot of fun however
I must admit I was rarely first when I used to play it.
Maps can also be very useful in subjects like history. Ancient maps can
provide a mass of information about a particular area or event and are also
extremely interesting to browse over.
The all time favourite type of map for children is a map showing where
treasure is hidden or buried.
Many films and television programs have been made on this particular subject
as it continues to stir the imagination of the young. A map of treasure can
also be used as a form of way of teaching children how to locate items on a
grid reference basis. This is a form of maths education.
As you can see there are many educational benefits to a map and I believe
that a map will always have an importance in education.
