Mapping natural pools and lakes

Natural pools and lakes are a part of our ecosystem. Mapping of these natural pools and lakes are a concept used to learn the character of these water bodies under the surface of water. The result obtained from mapping lakes are used to prepare maps and these are used by the departments of fisheries and wildlife to manage the nature's valuable resources. When people like hunters and anglers go out for various enthusiasms, they can make use of the maps to add to their enjoyment.

The mapping of pools and lakes are generally used by the fisheries department to know how much is the expected yield of the water body in terms of the amount of fish. They want to know the stocking quota of the fish and use the maps to aid in controlling natural vegetation. Management of water levels is possible only with the help of mapping. The data from maps are used by the publishers to provide information to the readers concerning hunting and fishing possibilities. The rate of sedimentation present in the basin of the lakes and pools are determined by the maps.
In the traditional times, mapping of lakes was done by using a weighted line to determine the depth of the lake. Later these were replaced by eco sounders. They pass a signal to the bottom of the lake. The signal reaches the bottom of the pool or lake and return back to the boat. The time of this travel of signal is calculated. This is the actual depth reading in such methods.

Now the technology has advanced a lot. Eco sounders are put to use these days. This is used along with computers and GPS systems. The two common methods used for mapping in the modern world are line of sight and GPS techniques. Once the results are obtained from the process of mapping, they are converted into maps. In the method used as line of sight, the results obtained are plotted along the transects. They are drawn on a hard shell. The contour lines are drawn and the map is prepared. The map so prepared is stored using electronic and digital methods. The map creation using GPS method is slightly different. Here the data from both sources including from sounding and base station are combined. The data from sounding is collected by the boat. When both data are combined, the resulting information will be more accurate. This data is then verified to know the quality. Once quality is ensured, it is loaded into a computer program. The program will draw the contour lines automatically. Other landmarks of the natural pools and lakes are then added to the map so prepared. This map is then edited and accuracy is ensured.

When the maps of natural pools and lakes are prepared, they are under the copy rights of those who have manufactured it. They will not be allowed to re-publish at any cost. Using of these data for commercial purposes is possible only with the permission of the concerned authority. Map license program ensures the proper working of this regulated system.
