Digital Maps

Digital Maps are defined as maps that are accessed through digital objects like computers, cellphones and other gadgets rather tan paper.
Images of old maps in scrolls and large-sized papers are now very rarely used. Gone are the times when you had to bring a giant map and use your finger to thoroughly scan paper. Digital Maps are starting to dominate the mapping industry. It is starting to be the norm because digital maps are easy to use and have a lot of features that allow people to travel and locate things faster. The only times these maps are used are either for academic purposes or for travel guides and beyond that, majority of the world use digital maps for navigation and locating.

1. GPS
One of the breakthrough technologies of the past 15 years is the GPS or Global Positioning System, This type of map, uses a satellite to locate either your position on the planet or the location you want to go to.
GPS like many other inventions, started from the military. It was used to take pictures of locations and as tracking and locating devices used for military purposes like bombing and Espionage. But today, it has expanded into the mainstream market where in it is used to make everyone’s lives easier.
Today, there are many variations of GPS one of the most successful uses of GPS has been its installation in automobiles, this type of GPS instructs you about everything you need to know. You either use voice or type in a place you want to go and it will locate it for you and give you directions to get there.
GPS is also available in PDA’s and mobile phones and this has really changed the ability of people to travel everyday.

2. Computer Programs

Computer Programs are also used to create digital maps. These maps can be used for geographical and a myriad of other purposes. Sometimes maps are created to make prototypes of projects and other visualizations of an area. Maps are used as a blueprint in Real Estate and can also help people understand geography better because of its simple and user friendly set-up.
Overall, I think Digital Maps are the future of Navigation. Most Digital Maps are very very useful. Most of them are reliable, easy-to-use and compact. These Maps can easily fit anyone’s pocket and can be accessed (almost) all over the world.
